The Guns of James Stewart-Robertson of Edradynate
John Dickson & Son have recently acquired two vintage guns that belonged to a renowned Scottish lawyer, philanthropist and accomplished musician. The guns will undergo a sympathetic restoration before joining the Dickson Heritage Gun Collection.
John Dickson & Son gun No. 2480 was delivered on the 10th August 1864 to J. Stewart Robertson of Edradynate. The gun is a 12 gauge breach-loading pin-fire hammer gun (converted to centre fire at a later date) with 30in damascus barrels, bar-action locks, and an oil finished stock. The perfect gun for hunting on the Edradynate estate in Perthshire.

John Dickson & Son gun No. 3437 was delivered on the 6th April 1877 to James Stewart Robertson. The gun is a 12 gauge breach-loading centre-fire hammer gun with 30in damascus barrels, bar-action re-bounding locks, and the stock finished with a horn heelplate.
James Stewart-Robertson was born on the 15th May 1823 at Edradynate House. He was the son and namesake of James Stewart-Robertson of Edradynate and Dorothea Stewart, youngest daughter of Adam Stewart of Cluny, and was the great, great grandson of Reverand Robert Stewart of Killiechassie and Pitcastle. The family seat of Edradynate is an estate with a mansion house in the Logierait Parish, Perthshire, near the left band of the Tay, near Aberfeldy.
After education and studying law at university, he settled in Edinburgh as a successful Advocate, progressing to Writer to the Signet and Magistrate. He was also appointed Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant of Perthshire due to being heir-apparent for Edradynate. On the 27th April 1852 he married Mary Jane Cunninghame, younger daughter of Robert Cunninghame of Ballanorris, Isle of Man, and they went on to have four daughters and one son.

James succeeded his father to the estate in 1862, becoming 5th of Derculich & Edradynate. In 1874, on the death of his mother’s sister, Mrs Stewart-Hepburn, James inherited the estates of Cluny and Blackhill (by his grandfather Adam Stewart’s deed of entail) and also inherited the properties of Colquhalzie and Glenquey (by Mr Stewart-Hepburn’s deed of entail).
Although he found his calling in the profession of the law, he remained an accomplished musician, having studied fiddle under Duncan McKercher (The Athole Paganini), John McAlpine and William McLeish (The Aberfeldy Paganini). He was a founding member of the Edinburgh Highland Reel and Strathspey Society in 1881, and became the Society's first President, overseeing its early development and remaining in this post until his death. He composed many tunes and in 1884 he edited and published “The Athole Collection”, concerned that interest in Scottish fiddle music was waning. It contained 870 strathspeys, reels, jigs, hornpipes and country dances and is recognised as one of the principal sources in this field. Upon his death, Stewart-Robertson was justly hailed by the Society for his contributions, but little mention was made of his musical talent and works in his newspaper obituaries, which celebrated his fame as a lawyer, philanthropist, and politician.

James Stewart-Robertson died on the 3rd August 1896, aged 73. He was buried at the family Burial Ground at Killiechassie, where in 1884, he had erected the large memorial stone in the graveyard “as a memorial of his ancestors and kinsfolk”. The plot contains individual graves of descendants of the four sons of the Reverend Robert Stewart of Killiechassie and Pitcastle.
James and Mary’s only son, also James Stewart-Robertson, was born in 1856, becoming Justice of the Peace for Perthshire and an officer in the Royal Perthshire Militia and Athole Highlanders. He was the last remaining male heir of Reverend Robert Stewart and on the 11th October 1880 he married Janet Beatrice Murray-Allan of Glenfeochan, Argyll. He died at Edradynate in 1940 aged 83 leaving a daughter Dorothy Campbell Stewart-Robertson (1891-1977) but no male issue.
