Vintage Gunners Cup 2023 - Return to Success

John Dickson & Son have just returned from the 25th Vintage Gunners World Side-by-Side shotgun Championship and Exhibition, held at Warrington Sporting Clays in Wellsville, Pennsylvania. Hosted by our friends, Delaney & Sons, it was a great event with a large turn out from vendors and a great gathering of side by side vintage shotgun enthusiasts.

The Dickson Owners Club USA gathering took place, and as usual, was very well attended with owners bringing their cherished Dickson's to display, this included the renowned Dr. Andrew Maclagan hammer gun from 1866. Maclagan was the illustrious Scottish surgeon, toxicologist and scholar of medical jurisprudence who's medical evidence in court contributed to the fate of the Burke & Hare murderers in Edinburgh in 1828.

The Dickson Round-Action Challenge was highly contested, with two competitors ending up with 47 ex-50, which is a remarkable result on a difficult course in the unseasonal high heat of Pennsylvania. When all was settled 'Mr. M' picked up the trophy, which he had been pursuing since missing out on winning the event at The Southern 2023.

A month of MacNaughtons

September is shaping up to be the month of MacNaughtons as we have managed to finally track down some fine examples of this rare ‘Edinburgh’ Round-Action gun. James MacNaughton filed his patent for a triggerplate action gun in 1879, one year before John Dickson filed his. With circa 500 of these guns ever made and 150 of these being the Skeleton variety it is obvious now why these are ‘Holy Grail’ guns. MacNab Challenge 2023 is a go!

The Delaney & Sons Macnab team have arrived here in Scotland and the pursuit is in full swing. Supported by John Dickson & Son with a Dickson Round-Action, Daniel Fraser stalking rifle and Alex Martin fishing rods, we are the only gunmakers to be able to cater for all elements of the Macnab. They are off to a flying start with grouse and stags already bagged but there is always the ever elusive salmon to catch too.
