News update from John Dickson and Son - June 2020

Business Interruption due to COVID-19 Pandemic Here in Dunkeld, our workshop and retail shop continue to be closed whilst the COVID-19 pandemic infection rate comes down to a manageable level in Scotland. We have used this time to do some maintenance on our retail and workshop spaces and to start the essential plans on how we will operate once the business is permitted to reopen. These operational procedures take into consideration the safety and welfare of both our staff and customers and will be published once we get the approval to reopen. In the interim, if we can assist with any enquiry on our products and services or you would like to line up an ammunition order for when we reopen, please use the contact page Dickson's Online Media The resulting travel restrictions from the COVID-19 Pandemic meant that all our plans to meet you for 2020 have been cancelled and moved into 2021. Luckily our friends at Delaney & Sons and Vintage Guns UK have taken the initiative and recorded three online interviews with our Managing Director, J-P Daeschler, where he was able to talk about the business - past, present and future. If you missed them the first time round, here they are: Virtual Southern - Interview with J-P Daeschler Interview with the Gunmaker No. 7 - J-P Daeschler Dickson Owners Club - Live Chat with J-P Daeschler Used Gun Inventory We have made a small update to our gun inventory for June. Even though our retail shop has been closed, this has not hampered international enquiries and demand is still strong for a vintage Scottish gun. We carry the largest selection of Dickson Round-Actions available anywhere but if there is something specific you are looking for, please get in touch. Click here to view our New and pre-owned guns Dickson Owners Club We continue to receive registrations for our Owners Club on a weekly basis and it is fantastic to see our guns and rifles in use across the globe. Our shop closure has meant a delay in getting membership cards and welcome letters out to you (which detail a number of benefits and discounts on our products and services) but we hope to have this resolved within the next month. If you have not registered your Dickson with us, you can do so here Dickson Owners' Club Dickson Merchandise We have had a huge number of enquiries for Dickson branded merchandise to support the resurgence in this great name of Scottish gunmaking. In order to meet that demand, we have been developing a number of unique Dickson branded clothing and gun accessories to complement your Dickson gun ownership. Our new webpage showcasing Dickson, MacNaughton and Daniel Fraser items will launch in July.

The Virtual Southern Side by Side Classic

This week John Dickson and Son would have been heading out to North Carolina to take part in The Southern Classic Side by Side Championship and Exhibition, an annual event in its 21st year, celebrating all things associated with vintage double guns. Understandably, this great event has been postponed until April 2021 and we will sadly have to wait until then to catch-up with all the Scottish gun and rifle enthusiasts who were coming to see us and take part in this fantastic event. However, our good friends at S. Delaney & Sons have taken the initiative and worked exhaustively in the last week to pull together a 'Virtual' gun show event that we can all participate in from the comfort of our own homes! This week will see the launch of the Virtual Southern where you can learn about various vendors, get tips on gun purchasing and inspection, shooting and browse some good deals and discounts. There are even some interesting interviews with actual exhibitors who would have attended the physical event. This includes a short catch-up with J-P Daeschler, Managing Director of John Dickson and Son. If you have never had the opportunity to attend the Southern Classic Side by Side in Sanford, NC, you can imagine what it would be like by watching this video (less than a minute) or this video (28 minutes). Please follow this link to the Virtual Southern Homepage, featuring the event and its daily itinerary and we hope you can enjoy some of the great content that Liz and Sean Delaney have put together for you.

Postponement of Bicentenary Plans

It has become clear over the last few days that we are all living through unprecedented times as the speed and scale of the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 impacts the global community and economy. John Dickson and Son is a small business located in Perthshire, Scotland with a global customer base. We have been closely monitoring the guidance issued by the UK Government and the Scottish Parliament, alongside advice from the World Health Organisation to ensure that we do all we can to prioritize the well-being of our team in Dunkeld as well as our suppliers and customers. As such, if you do visit us, please be aware that, while the shop and workshop remain open unless the advice recommends otherwise,  we have advised the team not to shake hands, although you will of course be welcomed with customary Scottish warmth and hospitality. The focus of the global community for the foreseeable future has to be tackling the pandemic.  With IWA Outdoor Classics sensibly postponed and a number of other important shows/exhibitions contemplating postponement, alongside the restrictions on travel and social gatherings, we have taken the decision to postpone our Bicentenary plans until 2021. We hope that everyone in the Dickson family stays safe and well over the coming months, and we look forward to the opportunity to celebrate with you all in 2021. We will keep you updated of our new schedule, however in the meantime we remain open for business repairing, restoring and building shotguns and rifles; delivering Scottish excellence as we have done for 200 years. Wishing you all the best in these trying times. Kind Regards J-P Daeschler Managing Director
